TikTok and Marketing Your Business for Success

Can TikTok be used for your business?

Social media is one of the most popular platforms for consumers to use and enjoy, it gives consumers the ability to connect share and engage with one another. Social media is also a popular tool for businesses to use as it enables their promotions and advertisements to reach more consumers in a manner that is more convenient to the consumer, it also allows for better brand engagement for the business. Overall social media provides benefits for all involved and the newest form of social media can be the same.

Introduction to TikTok

The most recent and popular social media platform introduced was TikTok. TikTok is a mobile video sharing app that enables users to share videos up to 15 seconds in length or up to 60 seconds in length if multiple videos are connected together (Moseman, 2019; Thorne, 2019). TikTok videos can incorporate different forms of music and sound effects, visual effects and some audio bites (Moseman, 2019). Since it was introduced in 2018 TikTok has become one of the most popular forms of social media, TikTok has been download approximately 1 Billion times and has roughly 500 million active users (Thorne, 2019; Moseman, 2019). TikTok is very easy to use, it’s fun, creative and the design of the user experience ensures that all video’s seen are easily accessible, interesting and provide selections based on previous trends and appeals (Moseman, 2019). Although TikTok users are mostly those in Generation Z, there has also been an increase in users between the ages of 24 – 35 years of age (Social, 2019).

Business Potential on TikTok

Based on the understanding and background of TikTok it can be deliberated that it may not possess the potential to reach all target markets from the business’ perspective however, TikTok provides the ability for organisations to increase brand awareness to a lot of consumers through merely sharing a TikTok video as well as encouraging users to participate in a TikTok challenge created through their video (Bump, 2019). The fun, silly and creative manner of TikTok videos enable businesses to share different insights into the company and who they are behind the curtain (Bump, 2019). This different perspective can change the way current consumers see the business for the better.

Diverse Business Strategies on TikTok

Recently TikTok has been used more by businesses through sponsored advertisements, influencer videos or even in some cases as a mini online shopping platform that enables users of TikTok to order a limited selection of items online from businesses due to a “shop now” button from the video they are watching (Moseman, 2019). TikTok can also provide a cost-effective way of building brand awareness and engagement through their videos because for both businesses and users alike TikTok is free. TikTok also provides built-in video shooting and video editing tools that can provide professional looking video’s free of charge, it will only cost a bit of time at first to learn how to use the tools (Thorne, 2019).

Utilising TikTok for Business Success

TikTok is a great new tool for all businesses as it provides the opportunity to change the way the business is perceived by some of the consumers through real and fun video content, it also improves the business’ brand awareness (Bump, 2019). TikTok is fun, creative, crazy and overall engaging. In order to successfully utilise TikTok businesses should provide creative content, utilise Hashtags (today’s modern social media language), encourage engagement through TikTok challenges and show a fun and personal side to the business and the employee’s that work there (Bump, 2019).
